Many electric scooters and most bicycles these days eschew band brakes for either caliper brakes, disc brakes, or coaster brakes. Nonetheless, many current models such as 3-wheel trikes like the Schwinn Meridian series still use this tried & true system as band brakes are still the best method around when it comes to applying the brake to a small 2-wheel axle barrel. Unlike the larger drum brakes used on automobiles, band brakes provide braking friction by using a spring-like metal band that clamps down on the spinning rotor.
